British Sides Struggle In Europa League

Thursday, 05 November 2009 23:50

Fulham's hopes of advancing in the Europa League took a blow when Roma came from behind to beat them 2-1.

Striker Diomansy Kamara shocked the Stadio Olimpico after he scored a penalty in the 19th minute.

But Fulham were rocked in the second half when substitute Erik Nevland was sent off within three minutes of coming on for a heavy challenge on Daniele De Rossi.

It got worse when former Liverpool defender John Arne Riise scored the equaliser in the 69th minute.

Roma took advantage of their extra man when Stefano Okaka headed in the winner a quarter of an hour from the end.

It was Fulham's first defeat in the group stage and they are now third in their group two points behind Roma.

In the other games involving British teams Celtic's hopes of reaching the final stages look slim after a goalless draw in Hamburg. And Everton's hopes suffered a setback after a 2-0 defeat at home to Benfica.

The top two teams from each group will join the third-placed sides from the eight Champions League groups in the last 32.
