Tennis Stars Handed One-Year Bans

Friday, 06 November 2009 09:50

Belgian players Yanina Wickmayer and Xavier Malisse have been suspended from tennis for 12 months after falling foul of doping regulations.

The Flemish Regional Tribunal confirmed that Wickmayer, a U.S. Open semi-finalist this summer, had failed to declare her whereabouts on three separate occasions.

This is in contravention of the standard required under the World Anti-Doping Agency rules.

Malisse had failed to declare his whereabouts twice and had also missed a test.

The bans take immediate effect with Wickmayer pulling out of her match at the Womens Tour event in Bali.

A spokesman for the International Tennis Federation said: "We cannot comment on doping cases until we have been notified in writing by the Belgian anti-doping agency. That has not happened as yet."
