New Music Video Blog

Each week Tony Marks from the Interactive Lunch brings you the videos of the biggest new additions to Mercury FM's Hit Music playlist...

16th November 2009.

Oh Robbie, Robbie, Robbie, how we've missed your entertaining ways! The world of hit music has been a poorer one in the absence of Robbie Williams, but he's back, and back on form. He's never been afraid to dress up in a silly outfit for a video (or dress down in the case of Rock DJ), and he looks like he had fun wearing a rabbit head in the Alice in Wonderland inspired You Know Me.

I always think it's a good thing when a successful artist moves away from their comfort zone and tries something new. Okay, it doesn't always work, but wouldn't music be boring if everyone just stuck to the same sound. She Wolf was a new direction for Shakira, and it took a while to get to grips with, but judging from your calls and text messages people definitely love it now. Her new one Did It Again will also have the same effect.

The X Factor Finalists do Michael Jackson's You Are Not Alone... Well, at least it's for charity!

5th November 2009.

I thought I'd do a rare midweek blog update as I wanted to get this next belting video online as soon as I could... You've Got The Love was a song that US soul singer Candi Staton recorded in the 1980s, but it wasn't until The Source put her vocals over a Frankie Knuckles track in 1991 that it became a dance classic.
Almost 20 years later, Florence Welch from Mercury Prize nominated Florence and the Machine puts her equally brilliant voice to it, and the results are sure to catapult her band further into the mainstream.

2nd November 2009.

We start this week with a track that we've been playing for a while on Mercury FM, but until now hasn't had a video to go with it (although you can scroll down for a live version that I posted back in September). I can only guess that Jay-Z and Alicia Keys are both so busy promoting their current albums, that finding the time to get them together to record a promo might have been a tad tricky.
Unsurprisingly the video for Empire State of Mind pays tribute to their hometown of New York just as much as the song does.

Sean Kingston was just 17 when his debut single Beautiful Girls went to number 1 all over the world. Now a mature 19 year old, he's released his follow up album Tomorrow which features guest appearances from Wyclef Jean and Good Charlotte... but cooler than that, is the appearance of his animated alter-ego Lil' Sean in the video to Face Drop.

23rd October 2009.

About three weeks ago on my show I shared the news that Dizzee Rascal had just shot the video for Dirtee Cash at Tower Bridge in London, which featured extras with giant fake breasts, Margaret Thatcher masks and a big bonfire (just in time for November 5th!). Since then my curiousity has got the better of me, and I've been desperate to see the final result... which is visually stunning, if not a little scary!

The award for raunchiest video of the week goes to Britney Spears and 3. She doesn't star in it herself, instead she leaves it to two highly attractive girls, and a very lucky guy to prove that three isn't a crowd!

And to round off the New Music Video Blog this week is the new one from La Roux. I say it's a new one, but it was originally their debut single, released in December 2008, but only reached number 153 in the charts!
However, since then Ellie and Ben have had massive success with In For The Kill and Bulletproof, so they're giving Quicksand another chance. I'm going to stick my neck on the line and say it'll do somewhat better this time around!

19th October 2009.

Let's start with a slightly weird and uncomfortable video, shall we? The fifth single release from Lily Allen's It's Not Me, It's You is Who'd Have Known (which samples Take That's Shine), and in the video (which has major similarities with Take's That's How Deep Is Your Love), we discover that she has an unhealthy obsession with Elton John and/or a bad Elton John impersonator.
I hate to break it to you Lily, but I don't think you're his type!

What an incredible year the Black Eyed Peas are having. Between them, Boom Boom Pow and I Gotta Feeling spent 6 months at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in the States, as well as both going to number 1 on the Big Top 40. Looking to make it a hat trick from the album The E.N.D. is Meet Me Halfway.

To capitalise on all the exposure that Alesha Dixon's getting at the moment, her record label have had the brainwave of re-releasing The Alesha Show. But in a cunning attempt to make us all buy it again, they've added a few extra tracks and re-titled it The Alesha Show - The Encore! Here's one of those new tracks, To Love Again.
Caution: Video contains excessive use of autumn leaves and Chinese lanterns.

Agnes' follow-up to Release Me is very danceable I Need You Now. The video was shot in the desert with a futuristic car, an American Indian on a horse and lots of colourful smoke... What's not to like?

12th October 2009.

Simon Fuller is a man who's used to success... He created Pop Idol (which has over 100 different versions around the world) and the Spice Girls. He also introduced Victoria Adams to David Beckham and now manages their careers, and The Sunday Times declared Fuller as the most powerful man in American TV. His next big project are called Mini Viva and NME Magazine has described their debut single I Left My Heart in Tokyo at the catchiest song of the year.

Armand van Helden has had huge success all over the world since You Don't Know Me went to number 1 in 1999. A decade later, and he's teamed up with Kanye West's favourite DJ A-Trak, who at the age of 15 became the youngest ever winner of the DMC World DJ Championship. Together they go under the title of Duck Sauce and have created a sound that's as infectious as You Don't Know Me. This is the very retro video to their debut single aNYway.

Having already recorded with Kanye West, Dizzee Rascal and Jay-Z, and an upcoming tour with Calvin Harris to look forward to, Mr Hudson looks like he's got the world in his hands. His second album, produced by Kanye, is due for release on December 1st. This is the follow-up to Supenova, White Lies.

Talking of Calvin Harris, the 4th single to be released from Ready For The Weekend is Flashback. I'm not sure why there's a boat in the video. Maybe it's sybolic of a rocky relationship, or maybe he just wanted to go out on a boat. Enjoy.

Have a good week,

 5th October 2009.

Well I've got egg on my face this morning after spending last week telling you that Jay-Z and Alicia Keys would DEFINITELY go to number 1 on the Big Top 40 Show this week... It only made number 2, narrowly missing out to the very cute Chipmunk track Oopsy Daisy.

Last month Beyonce proved what a class act she is, when she asked Taylor Swift to join her onstage at MTV's VMAs, after Kanye West steamed in and ruined her award winning moment. Her new video to Broken Hearted Girl is also pure class, shot mostly in black and white, it shows B reminiscing on a recent split.

N-Dubz have said that their second album is going to be full of "club bangers"... Sounds good to me!
It's due for release on November 16th, and judging by the amount of money their record company have spent on the video to I Need You (check out Dappy's personalised helicopter!) they're expecting it to be big.

Enjoy the new vids, and if there's anything you want me to upload for you, then get in touch using the form at the bottom of the page.

Have a good week,

30th September 2009.

For me, the new single from Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys is just MAGNIFICENT!  The combination of Jay-Z's lyrics and Alicia's beautiful voice is a perfect combination (apologies to Beyonce!).
I've been trying to find a video to Empire State of Mind, but there doesn't seem to be one yet. So until one materialises, here's some live footage of Jay-Z performing it (without Keys unfortunately) at Madison Square Gardens in New York. The gig was a September 11th memorial, so you can only begin to imagine what an emotional and powerful moment this must have been to the audience.

28th September 2009.

Big thanks to Sadie in Horsham who sent me a link for Tik Tok by Ke$ha. I've been looking for it for ages, but somehow missed it on Ke$ha's official MySpace page!

25th September 2009.

Tinchy Stryder's been asked to join Lil' Wayne on his US tour later this year, and the word is that some very influential people in the world of hip hop see him as the next big thing, so expect to see him making waves stateside soon! He's already had a number 1 with Number 1, plus that excellent team up with Sugababe Amelle on Never Leave You. Click here for the video to his latest single You're Not Alone.

Snow Patrol were given the task of replacing Oasis as last minute V Festival headliners in August after the Gallagher brothers had yet another bust up (yawn!). Their forthcoming singles collection Up To Now is rammed with 15 years worth of rousing festival favourites like Chasing Cars, Chocolate and Run, plus three brand new tracks including Just Say Yes which gets its release on November 2nd. Check out the video below, where white seems to be the band's new favourite colour!

Without doubt, Pitbull fancies himself as a bit of a womaniser. In the video to Hotel Room Service he even refers to himself as Armando Bond!
Girls, would you go up to his room?

Two tracks for you now that seem to be winning people over, so I thought I'd stick them up on the new music blog. Lots of people have told me that they didn't like the new Cheryl Cole and Robbie Williams singles at first, but now really love them. No doubt we'll see Chezza performing Fight For This Love on X Factor sometime soon, but until then click here for the video. There's also rumours that Robbie will be an X Factor guest this year. Let me know what you think about his comeback video for Bodies.

I'll have more brand new vids for you next week,

Tony x
