80% of local pubs sell to children
8 out of 10 pubs tested by Sussex police in places like Crawley, Rusper and Hawyards Heath sold alcohol to children.
They've been doing a special operation during half term to cut down on anti social behaviour and binge drinking.
Here's what the police have to say about it :
"Over 80% of pubs in North Downs which were targeted by the Sussex Police Licensing Unit served alcohol to children.
Operation Teepee is a week long initiative during half-term and on Tuesday October 28th, officers visited specific premises in North Downs after receiving information that they had been serving alcohol to underage youngsters.
The bar staff that sold at each of these premises – namely The Swan in Horsham Road, Crawley, The Swan in Rusper, The Swan in Roffey and The Burrell Arms in Haywards Heath – have each received an £80 fixed penalty notice.
Sussex Police will now work closely with these licensed premises by meetings with the designated premises supervisor (landlord) and the pubs’ area management to prevent further underage sales.
Sgt Andy Bradford, from the Licensing Unit, said: "This is a very disappointing result which is totally unacceptable given recent publicity of underage and binge drinking in recent months.
"This type of operation will continue to be conducted to stop children being able to buy alcohol."

(30/10/2009 08:51:07) I'm not surprised by the numbers but, am very surprised that all the police have done other than give words of advice and fined the licence holders a fixed £80 fee. Although £80 is a lot of money it is not much to make them think first next time before serving more under age kids. More needs to be done about the people selling alcohol to underage kids as this could and sometimes does have serious effects. |
